Storm Ciaran – how to deal with storm damage

PUBLISHED: 2nd Nov 2023

I have just read that a tornado weather warning has been issued ahead of Storm Ciaran battering the British Isles and particularly the Channel Islands. The warning, issued by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation said the highest risk of a tornado would be across South Wales and London, however as Ciaran moves North East into the Leeds area, we hope that the impact will lessened, although heavy rain and winds are forecast.

If winds are blowing above 50 mph, then this is when you can unfortunately start seeing damage to your home, with trees toppling, power lines coming down and debris being blown around.

All this relentless weather can leave you with a damaged roof and even cause leaks that can impact your home interior too. Once the storm has passed, it is important to check that your roof is not damaged, document any problems and work with your insurance company.

By following these steps, you can ensure that any damage is noticed quickly-

  • Inspect your attic for leaks or water damage, also if any water stains are appearing on your ceiling or walls then you may need roof repairs
  • Look for signs on the ground – check for missing tiles or missing pieces of facia, including any bits that may have been displaced from your chimney.
  • Check the areas where pipes join the wall to ensure they have not been displaced – this can include skylights and vents
  • If damage has been caused by a falling tree – stay out of the house until it has been confirmed that there is no structural damage – consider calling a general contractor rather than a roof repair specialist
  • Stay safe and avoid going up on the roof yourself

Windows and doors can also be vulnerable to wind damage and flying debris. Inspect your windows for cracks, holes, broken panes and damaged frames – watch out for broken shards of glass to if your windows have been damaged.

So, if you are unfortunate to have taken the brunt of the storm and need roof repairs, the first thing to do is call your insurance company, they will arrange for a roofer to provide an estimate for the damage and arrange for any temporary repair.

Hopefully we will escape too much damage and  North Leeds will stay safe over the next few hours as storm Ciaran heads North
