Whether it is growing seeds, taking a break to nurture your houseplants or enjoying a cup of tea in your favourite green space, gardening provides so much joy. This week is national Gardening week, which is the Nation’s biggest celebration of gardening and raises awareness of the difference that gardens and gardening can make to the lives of everyone in the UK.
Inspiring more people, particularly the next generation of gardeners, to experience the joy of creating and growing beautiful green spaces.
So here are some of the things you should be doing in your garden in May
- Plant out half-hardy annuals such as dahlias and summer bedding plants now that the frost has passed
- If containers and hanging baskets have been grown in a greenhouse, you can now bring them outside during the day
- Repair bare patches of lawn with turf which is now available
- Open greenhouse vents and doors on warmer days. You can also damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity
- Sow succession crops such as salad leaves
- Check for infestation of aphids on roses and wash them off with water
- Earth up potatoes, to stop the crop forming on the soil surface
- Plant out courgettes, squash and other tender vegetables such as runner beans
- Feed container plants every two weeks
- Hoe and pull weeds regularly and give evergreen hedges a trim (but make sure there are no birds nesting!)
Throughout this week activities will be taking place at Harlow Carr gardens where you can discover activities for all ages.
