First Impressions Count: Why Good Photography Sells Homes

PUBLISHED: 18th Sep 2026

There's a moment that happens dozens of times a day. On phones and laptops up and down the country. A buyer scrolls past a listing in under two seconds because the photos didn't catch their eye. It's not fair, and it's not always an accurate reflection of the home behind those photos. But it's how buyers behave, and it's why photography deserves far more attention than it usually gets.

For most buyers, their first "viewing" of your home happens entirely online, long before they ever consider booking an in-person visit.

Buyers decide before they ever step through the door

The vast majority of buyers now do their initial house-hunting from a screen, deciding within seconds whether a property is worth a second look. A handful of dark, cluttered or badly angled photos can make a beautifully presented home look like an afterthought. A buyer will simply scroll past without ever knowing what they missed. On the flip side, well-composed, well-lit photography can make a modest three-bed semi feel like somewhere a buyer can genuinely picture their life.

This isn't about tricking anyone. It's about giving a property the fair, accurate representation it deserves, so that the right buyers, the ones who'd actually love the house in person, are the ones walking through the door.

It's not just the camera

Good photography is only part of the picture. It's the angle a room is shot from. The time of day chosen to catch the best natural light. Small styling touches. These things help a buyer picture the space as a home rather than an empty room. Pair that with floor plans that actually help them make sense of the layout, and a written description that highlights what makes that property genuinely special (rather than reading like a list of room dimensions).

All of it works together. A stunning photo with no context, or a great description paired with poor images, undersells a property just as much as bad photography on its own.

Why it matters more than sellers think

Sellers often focus their energy on price. It's understandable, but presentation is one of the few things within a seller's control that can genuinely change how quickly, and how well, a property sells. Two identical houses, priced identically, can attract very different levels of interest purely based on how well they were photographed and marketed. Good photography doesn't just attract more viewings - it attracts the right viewings, from buyers who already like what they've seen before they arrive.

David Phillip's View:

"I've always believed photography is one of the most underrated parts of selling a home. It's not decoration, it's the difference between a buyer booking a viewing or scrolling past. We take real pride in how we present every property we list. A home only gets one chance at a first impression, and we want that impression to do it justice. Get the photography right, and everything else about a sale tends to get a little easier."
