Over half of millennials would live in a caravan (or on a boat) to get on the property ladder

When asked if they would consider an alternative dwelling 53% of millennials said they would temporarily live in a caravan (54%), houseboat (33%) ad some would also consider a trailer (14%) – the most popular long–term residence option was a houseboat, with 27% saying they would happily live and bring up a family on the water.

48% of the people questioned cited affordability as the main perk of this alternative style of living, although 25% are drawn to the associated health and well-being benefits such as improved mental health.

Of the same group, 15% are attracted to the environmental advantage while 10% would find it more convenient for travelling.

One Long –time boat renter claimed that life afloat offers a better way of living , the lifestyle is more relaxed and you can move whenever you want.

Living in such a mobile way means you can meet many people who are living on the canal where people are rarely judged by others and have the chance to start life afresh if they want to – it is also a much healthier lifestyle.

The canal and River Trust says that GP’s are even prescribing canal walks to combat depression, reduce stress and cure loneliness.

People are willing to live a little smaller in order to travel, have more freedom and enjoy all the different places to visit.

Alternative homes may be temporary solution, but people may choose to make this long term especially if they are looking for independence but want to avoid renting or simply don’t want to give up flexibility and put down roots.
